On April 21, 2020, prior to the release of the second season of The Mandalorian, sources close to the production reported that Jon Favreau had been "writing season 3 for a while", and that the production design department had begun working on the season the day prior. On December 22, 2020, Jon Favreau said that production for the third season would begin after The Book of Boba Fett, which had started production.
Shooting commenced in September 2021.
